Reflections of Haiti

The People of Haiti -  Reece Smith

Some may not understand the beauty of Haiti, but perhaps it’s because they’ve never experienced it first hand.  Even Port-au-Prince with its garbage-ridden sidewalks, throngs of hurried pedestrians and backdrop of honking car horns is exquisite in its chaos.  In the countryside, where men and women walk miles each day in tattered clothes to work a farm or carry water, there is splendor in their movement.

In this country there is a beauty that is hard to define, except to say that it is something in the people; their beautiful dark brown skin that looks as if it’s been carved from flawless mahogany, and their even more beautiful souls that seem to be carved from something delicate and yet unbreakable.
Somehow they have met head on the challenges that this life has imposed upon them, challenges that most of us are not strong enough to face, let alone conquer.

Some may call this land God-forsaken, but God has neither forsaken nor forgotten.  He will never forget his own.  Sometimes it seems he moves too slowly.  Other times we see no motion at all.  Then we meet a person who shows us the lightening speed with which this beautiful nation can be the center of a universe built on the love of God, one person at a time.
