The Church and Society Unit is responsible for the ministry and work within the life of the Presbytery that relates to mission, justice, and human needs. The Unit serves to advocate, educate, and interpret the work of local congregations, the Presbytery, and the General Assembly in the following areas:

  • Global Missions 

  • Mission education and awareness training for congregations and local church mission committees 

  • International partnership/mission trip opportunities in Haiti

  • Network of presbytery leadership involved in mission

MISSION  POSSIBLE is a quarterly newsletter of Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery that shares mission success stories and possibilities from our congregations.  All congregations are encouraged to contact Deb Guess at dcguess@gmail.com with stories and digital photos of mission projects, mission trips, and mission experiences that might be of interest to other congregations.    MISSION  POSSIBLE will be posted on the website as it becomes available.

  • Local Missions

  • Humanitarian Project Support

The Local Missions Committee receives requests from organizations within the bounds of Presbytery for funding to assist programs that help improve the lives of those needing particular services.  Past and present recipients of these funds include Lowcountry Food Bank, child care centers for low-income families, dental clinics for migrants, counseling centers, and more.  Requests are reviewed annually to see if they meet qualifying criteria and evaluations of approved funding recipients are done annually. 

  • Local  Mission Awareness and Education

  • Hispanic Ministry 
    • A task force has been appointed to work in the initial stages of creating a ministry with Hispanic persons living within the bounds of Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery.  The task force began its work in January of 2005. 
  • Racial Ethnic Ministries 
  • Presbyterian Black Caucus 
  • Environmental, social, and racial justice issues

The International Justice Mission Program

  • Self-Development of People (SDOP) 
  • Provide information and training about applying for funds, both local and national,  that are available to qualifying SDOP groups within the bounds of Presbytery 
  • Educate congregations, sessions, and mission committees about SDOP and potential recipients
