Santee is located off I-95 where many
tourists stop when passing thru as we have many restaurants and motels
in our area. There are three golf courses and Lake Marion to attract
to our area with many who decide to make this their home. Many of our
members reside in Bradford Village, a retirement community, Santee
Resort and Santee National. Santee State Park is about 5 miles from
our town.
On December 1, 1985, the first worship
service was led by Reverend Barry Van Deventer at Clarks' Restaurant.
Bob Hawkins served as supply pastor for the Presbyterian Chapel
Council. On March 2, 1986, the chapel serviced moved from the
restaurant to the Bradford Village Clubhouse. On June 2, 1986, the
Mission Development Committee of the Presbytery met in Santee to make
a decision on the most desirable site for the future church.
On February 14, 1986, the Reverent Coit
R. Troutman, Jr. was called to be minister of Presbyterian Chapel. On
November 6, 1988, in a service at First Presbyterian Church of
Orangeburg, we became Santee Presbyterian Church. Groundbreaking was
held on October 21, 1989, and the church was dedicated on November 11,
1990.
Dr. Coit R. Troutman, Jr. celebrated 50
years in the ministry while here. He passed away in Scotland while on
vacation October 11, 2000. Interim ministers were Dr. Walter E.
Hickman and Seminary graduate student, Ms. Sigrid Fowler.
Reverend John C. Doubles became our
minister on September 16, 2001, and was officially installed on
October 7, 2001, by the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery. Our membership
at this time is about 90. The church is in a retirement area and our
membership is composed of many senior citizens who are young at heart
and have a very active lifestyle.
